Are peanuts a legume or nut. As well see later nutritionally speaking they have some properties of nuts and some of legumes. In the United States peanuts are rarely eaten raw. The peanut is therefore beneficial to humans as well as for the earth which perhaps makes it the most important nut even though it is a legume in existence.
The plant has yellow flowers leaves and an interesting. Common legumes that may ring a bell are peas beans and lentils. But some foods are quite confusing to classify into either category.
Peanuts are actually not a nut at all. Things like walnuts and almonds are traditional nuts and they grow above ground in trees. It contains two seeds the pod is indehiscent and the seed is not attached to the ovary wall.
Given the confusion and recent increase in nut allergies of both kinds people have started adopting the phrase tree nut to distinguish non-leguminous nuts from legumes. Despite their name peanuts are unrelated to tree nuts. June 1 2019.
Like other legumes peanuts have a symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their root nodules. Even though nut is in its name a peanut is actually a legume. They are botanically considered drupes.
So are peanuts legumes or nuts. Peanuts grow underground as opposed to nuts like walnuts almonds etc. But peanuts actually grow underground.
